Jaw surgery can be performed both for aesthetic and functional reasons. In normal occlusion, upper jaw should overlap lower jaw. But in some people, there may be an occlusion problem due to the upper and lower jaws position such as prognathism or retrognathism. Also, they may be deviated to the right or left according to the midline. These problems are usually accompanied by malocclusion or joint problems and can be treated with orthognathic surgery. Because the effects of these surgeries can mostly be seen on profile view, they can be entitled as profile-plasty.
In some people, although occlusion is normal, chin may be prognathic or retrognathic. In this condition, chin may be repositioned with surgery. Alternative to the advancement surgery which is done in retrognathic chin, implants (for example porous polyethylene) can be used for chin augmentation as well. Hyaluronic acid fillers can also be used as a non-surgical method for chin augmentation. Additionally, jawline can be defined with these fillers. Longevity of the results depends on the filler?s degradation.
