With the aging of the face, various signs of aging are seen in the neck region over time. The neck skin is a thin skin and is located on a very thin muscle called platysma. Over the years, this muscle may form generally horizontal wrinkles and also vertical wrinkles on the skin. Likewise, signs of aging in the neck can also be observed for other reasons, such as loss of skin elasticity and fat accumulation under the chin region.
Skin, muscles, adipose tissue, and even salivary glands, which are the causes of aging in the neck area, should be evaluated separately and included in the treatment plan if necessary. Surgical methods used for the neck region can be categorized as neck skin lifting, repairing of platysma muscle isolated in the midline, and transection of platysma bands causing wrinkles. The fat tissue under the chin can be taken by liposuction or by direct excision. Also sagging salivary glands is treated if needed. Neck lifting usually starts with an incision placed on the back of the ear. This incision provides very good results in most of the patients because it is located just below the scalp and has quite good skin quality. In some patients, another incision may be needed just under the chin.
