There are dozens of techniques in the literature defined for breast reduction surgery. Various scientific studies have revealed that some of these techniques led to better outcomes. In breasts larger than this, a horizontal incision is placed along the under-breast fold, in addition to the round and perpendicular incisions (Figure 3). Many surgeons in the world prefer only the lastly mentioned, 'inverted T'-shaped technique.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY

Will Any Scar Remain After a Breast Reduction Surgery? 

The prominence of a scar that will remain after a breast reduction surgery varies depending on three factors. These are the technique that is used, genetic status of the individual, and the environmental factors. In order to reduce the amount of scars, the techniques resulting in less scars, which are stated above, may be preferred in appropriate patients. You do not have the chance to change your genetics. However you may reduce the prominence of the scar that'll remain by not smoking cigarettes, and by consuming high-protein and high-vitamin C foods. It's possible to try to reduce the prominence of the scar that'll remain; however the absence of scars is unfortunately impossible with today's technology. Can I Breast Feed After the Breast Reduction Surgery?

An important part of your milk canals is spared during breast reduction surgery. Under normal conditions, you can lactate by means of these canals. However the quantity of milk may decrease, since some milk canals are removed during reduction procedure. Various studies in the literature have indicated that the remaining milk canals are generally sufficient to feed your baby. If breast feeding can't be maintained after surgery, the main reason of this fact may be the absence of the patient's ability of breast feeding because of the hormonal or genetic causes. The milk canals can't be spared only when the nipple is transferred as a free patch. Although this technique is required too rarely, it may be preferred only in the cases of extremely gigantic breasts (for instance if 2 kg. of tissue has to be removed from each). During the pre-operative consultation, talk with doctor if you have the possibility of getting pregnant in the future.

 

Will I Have Any Problem Related to my Nipple's Sense or Circulation After the Breast Reduction Surgery?

A problem in the sense or circulation of nipple is theoretically present with a very low possibility. Because, the nipple is transferred to its new location on a pedicle which has the blood supply. During the operation, there's no way to understand exactly the positions of vessels in this of this pedicle or around it. On the other hand, this risk can be minimized with various precautions and experience.

 

RECOVERY AFTER THE BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY

It's generally recommended to stay in hospital for 1 night after a breast reduction surgery. Drains may be used in order to suction leakages inside. On average, these drains are removed around 2 days. It's possible to take a shower following a three-day dressing. Just before your discharge from hospital, you'll be worn a special bra, and be requested to use it for one month.
