BREAST LIFTING (MASTOPEXY)

As years pass, factors like pregnancy, lactation and gravity lead to the loss of elasticity of the connective tissue included in skin and breasts. This results in impairment of the breast shape, and the breasts start to soften and sag. Additionally, the nipples may become wide more than normal. Breast lifting is a surgical procedure performed by the removal of the excess of skin over breasts and shaping the breast tissue inside, in order to reshape, lift and tighten the sagging breasts. In addition, the nipple and the area around it (areola) are positioned in order to become as they have to, and the width of the areola may be reduced. As an alternative method, lifting may be done only by using a silicone prosthesis in the patients existing with slight breast sagging.

 

IS BREAST LIFTING OPERATION CONVENIENT FOR ME?

Everybody having breast sagging and excess breast skin may have breast lift operation. Some patients have breast lift operation after an extreme weight loss or after undergoing a weight loss operation. This operation is sometimes preferred without using a silicone prosthesis, for the aim of correcting asymmetric breasts. However, the main reason why many patients want to have this operation is to eliminate the negative effects developing after gaining and then losing weight, and pregnancy and/or lactation, which are potentiated by the natural influence of gravity. 

 

If you plan to have a child, tell it to your physician, since the course of a future pregnancy may affect the outcomes of the breast lift operation. The interview you'll make with your physician will clarify the characteristics and details of the procedure. Before you attend the appointment with your physician, be sure that you've made enough research about the outcomes of the breast lift surgery.

 

BREAST LIFT WITH AUGMENTATION

Breast lift operation and breast augmentation surgery (mostly with silicone prostheses) can also be concomitantly done in the patients who are candidates for breast lift operation and demand also to increase the size and volume of their breasts. These two procedures may be performed concomitantly in one session, or may also be performed in two separate sessions. BREAST LIFT SURGERY

In breast lift surgery, many factors as the size and the shape of the desired breast, its tightness, the position of the area around nipple, and the elasticity of your skin have to be taken into consideration; these matters will be discussed during the interview you'll make with your physician before the operation. In all breast lift operations, a scar exists at the area around nipple (Figure 1). In some patients, an additional perpendicular incision between nipple and under-breast fold (Figure 2), and in others, a horizontal incision along the under-breast fold in combination with this perpendicular incision (inverted T) may also be needed (Figure 3).

After the incision is placed, the breast tissue under it will be reshaped. The area around nipple is placed in a natural and symmetric position, and the excess skin is excised in order to add a more revitalized and good-looking appearance to the saggy skin. The sutures are made aesthetically, so that they are invisible from outside. A typical breast lift surgery takes about 3 hours. However this duration is never exact, because your physician continues to your operation till the formation of the most good-looking and aesthetic breasts.

 

THE RECOVERY PERIOD AFTER A BREAST LIFT SURGERY

After the operation, 2-3 days of dressing is sufficient. During the recovery of your breasts, a post-operative supportive bra is worn on the 1^st day in order to both support your breasts and to reduce swelling. Generally a small thin tube is placed in the breast (drain); the aim of this tube is the easier suction of the possible post-operative leakages from the operational area. Although it varies depending on the individual, these tubes are removed on the 2^nd day. A 48-hour pain treatment is sufficient, usually this period is pain free as well. The average duration of the hospitalization is 1 day. It's favorable to be accompanied by an attendant after the operation and during your return to home. You'll be prescribed analgesic, antibiotic and scar reducer during your discharge from the hospital.

 

It generally takes 7 days for a patient to return to the normal professional life.  Along four weeks following the operation, our patients have to avoid making exercise, and lifting heavy things. Unless otherwise stated during the post-operative controls, you also have to avoid exposing the operational site to water.  This period is nearly 3 days.  Along several weeks following surgery, your breasts may swell and bruises may exist.  This is extremely normal.  As long as the swellings in your breasts do not cease completely, you can not notice and understand the outcomes of breast surgery 100%.

Will Any Scar Remain After a Breast Lift Surgery?

The prominence of a scar that will remain after a breast reduction surgery varies depending on three factors. These are the technique that is used, genetic status of the individual, and the environmental factors. In order to reduce the amount of scars, the techniques resulting in less scars, which are stated above, may be preferred in appropriate patients. You do not have the chance to change your genetics.However you may reduce the prominence of the scar that'll remain by not smoking cigarettes, and by consuming high-protein and high-vitamin C foods. It's possible to try to reduce the prominence of the scar that'll remain; however the absence of scars is unfortunately impossible with today's technology. Will I Experience Any Problem Related to my Nipple's Sense or Circulation After the Breast Lift Surgery?

A problem in the sense or circulation of nipple is theoretically present with a very low possibility. Because, the nipple is transferred to its new location on a pedicle which has the blood supply. During the operation, there's no way to understand exactly the positions of vessels in this of this pedicle or around it. On the other hand, this risk can be minimized with various precautions and experience.

 

How Soon Can You Have Breast Surgery After Giving Birth?

Being able to have a breast surgery depends on your lactation rather than birth. Ideally, the appropriate time for the surgery is planned for 6 months after finishing breastfeeding. Also you should have no milk in the breast canals in the preoperative USG examination.

 

Can I Breast Feed After the Breast Lift Surgery?

During his operations, Prof. Dr. Haldun Kamburoğlu uses a technique that makes the persistence of breast feeding ability possible. However the quantity of milk during breast feeding may decrease due to the type of operation performed. This state, on the other hand, is also dependent on the type of surgical procedure applied, whether or not the patient possessed ability of breast feeding before surgery, and the anatomical characteristics as the size of breasts. If breast feeding can't be maintained after surgery, the main reason of this fact may be the absence of the patient's ability of breast feeding because of the hormonal or genetic causes. Because technically, breast lift surgery does not prevent breast feeding, but may only reduce it. During the pre-operative consultation, talk with doctor if you have the possibility of getting pregnant in the future.
